Policies & Procedures


Access

  • Users requiring wired access to the Columbia network must submit a service request to ARCS and provide the following information below. All wired network devices must be registered with Columbia. ARCS will register and generate an IP address and configure the device.

- Device type ie: mac, pc, printer
- Ethernet address
- location
- Name and uni of the requester

  • Users Access to Columbia's wireless network (athens) may do so using the instructions on the ARCS wiki page or by submitting a service request to ARCS. ARCS is not responsible for the support of the athens wireless network therefore users should call 5-HELP for connectivity issues.


Best Practices

  • Maintaining system security updates including virus protection software is always encouraged. ARCS configures systems to perform automatic updates regularly along with virus protection software. Users should refrain from downloading software from obscure websites unless it is from a trusted vendor. Please consult with ARCS if you are not sure.
  • Users should use lab owned computers for work related activities only. Using a lab owned computer for personal purposes ie: downloading music, software etc... often results in virus infections and/or network deactivation by Columbia IT security.
  • Please consult with ARCS if you have a collaboration that requires the exchange of large amounts of data. ARCS does not have nor supports an FTP site to permit downloads ARCS has other solutions are available for this purpose.
  • Never lend out your statically assigned IP address.


Rules

  • Exceeding Network Usage: Users should be mindful of excessive data transfers to and from the internet. CUIT has a bandwidth quota system that will disable your network connection when the quota is exceeded.   • Copyright Material: Users must refrain from downloading copyright material. ARCS adheres to Columbia University's copyright policy. For more information go to: http://policylibrary.columbia.edu/copyright-information-network-users
  • Static IP addresses are assigned to each registered device therefore users are not to use any other ip address to connect to C2B2/Columbia network.
  • All computers connected to the network must have the firewall settings activated at all times.
  • As per Columbia policy no wireless router shall be installed in any University facility.
  • Guests or any non Columbia users requiring wireless access should use "guest net" to connect. Athens is reserved for Columbia personnel only therefore users should never lend there athens credentials to connect unless authorized by their PI.


Violations

ARCS adheres to all University Policies concerning Network communications. Failure to follow ARCS and the University's policy will result in restriction of communication services and or legal action.
