Policies & Procedures

Data ownership and configuration'

Best Practices

  • Users should always maintain their files and folders/directories with read, write, execute for themselves only. If you need to share data with your lab members you can add group write permissions to the file and/or directory.
  • If data sharing is required with collaborators from other labs within the C2B2/ICG/HICCC domains a shared folder will be setup by ARCS. A service request must be submitted to ARCS with a PI or lab managers permission for the creation of the shared folder. Collaborators will not have access to any other folder

ARCS will configure all user directories with the correct user ownership, group ownership and set the permission to owner read, write, execute only. Users should never change this configuration.

ARCS will not host any FTP site in the ARCS and ICG domains.

HIPPA Data

  • HIPAA and PHI Users that store identifiable HIPAA and/or PHI data on their local system and/or any external storage device are required to inform ARCS immediately. ARCS will be required to inform Columbia security to audit the system, and investigate the usage of data. Columbia Security will provide the necessary security configuration requirements so all devices adhere to all HIPAA and PHI regulations. ARCS will not be liable for any lab/user failing to report the possession of Identifiable HIPAA and PHI data.

ARCS adheres to Columbia University's policies concerning all criteria of HIPPA compliance and security.
