Policies & Procedures

Labs must purchase ARCS IT support services in order to receive full technical support coverage for computer hardware, software and peripherals. For more information about purchasing ARCS services please go to the following link: <link>

Purchasing Hardware

This section refers to Columbia owned equipment only ie: using Columbia funds and/or Grants.
It is recommended but not necessary for labs to consult with ARCS when deciding a hardware purchase. Users can send their hardware requirements to ARCS by submitting a request ticket and ARCS will recommend equipment that is best suited for their application via a vendor quote. Users shall then process the quote and inform ARCS when the hardware arrives. In all cases ARCS will use a vendor from Columbia University "preferred vendor list" ARCS will not make recommendations or procure quotes for scientific equipment.

Installation of Hardware

For ARCS to provide total support for new hardware equipment it must be installed and configured by ARCS. Labs electing to self configure hardware equipment ARCS will supply users an ip address with the understanding that ARCS will NOT be held responsible for the support of self configured computers. ARCS personnel can assist users with acquiring quotes from preferred Columbia University vendors.

Personally purchased computers

Users electing to use a personally purchased computer on campus may receive support from ARCS if the follow criteria is meet below:

1. Labs must register the computer with ARCS to receive an IP address. (Wired computers only)
2. Users must have their computer fully configured by ARCS, bound to the ICG or ARCS domain and relinquish their administrative rights.
