Desktop Applications

I. Access

Many of the more frequently used desktop applications used by ARCS and ICG users are downloaded from the CUIT website. Users should send ARCS a service request to install any supported application. For licensed applications, users may send a service request to ARCS requesting a quote for the desired application.

Supported Applications:

All Columbia University downloadable software. http://cuit.columbia.edu/cuit/software-downloads
Apple products (licensed products must show proof of purchase before installation).
Adobe products (licensed products must show proof of purchase before installation).
Matlab (licensed through Columbia. Local desktop installations must be installed by ARCS).

Supported Operating systems:

Windows XP pro, Windows7
Mac OS X 10.5 to latest release
Linux Cent OS 5 to latest release, Fedora 10 to latest release.

II. Best Practices

Users should use caution when downloading any application from the web especially from a non Columbia or any untrusted website. Users may consult with ARCS if help is needed finding a trusted website before downloading an application.

III. Rules

It is the responsibility of the ARCS team to install, troubleshoot and resolve licensing issues with all desktop applications. Applications with campus wide license agreements such as Microsoft products shall be downloaded through the CUIT website only. All other non campus wide licensed products must be purchased by the Principle Investigator, lab manager or administration. ARCS will install and log the licensing information for auditing purposes.

Scientific Applications

Systems running vendor specific applications attached to a scientific instrument will be maintained by the vendor this includes, installation, upgrades and troubleshooting. The Lab manager or PI will be responsible for scheduling maintenance for the device and software application. ARCS can assist with system issues as long as it does not interfere with vendor system configuration.

Systems running scientific applications that are NOT attached to a scientific instrument will be maintained by ARCS.

IV. Violations

ARCS takes a zero-tolerance policy on software license violations. It is the policy of ARCS that all software licensing shall not exceed the limit of licenses purchased. Any user who knowingly violates these policies may be subject to account suspension, and computer systems on which the software is installed may be erased. Additionally, violation of software licensing terms may constitute a legal violation and/or a violation of CUMC IT, CUIT, and/or Columbia polices.
